Uncharted Waters Online, originally released as Daikoukai Jidai Online (大航海時代 Online?) in Japan, is a MMORPG developed by KOEI based on the Uncharted Waters series of games. Set in the Age of Exploration, it features over a hundred different sailing ships and an open world based on real Earth geography. With a sandbox style game play and skill based character development, players interact with each other and engage in many activities such as combat, exploration, and trade on both sea and land. The game requires monthly subscription fee in Japan but the international server is free to play. Uncharted Waters Online is available on the Windows platform in simplified Chinese, traditional Chinese, English, Japanese and Korean, also available on the PlayStation 3 since 2009. Six years after the initial Asian release, Netmarble produced the game, under its traditional English title, for the non-Asian market in North America and Europe. On August 19, 2010, the official site for English and US game versions was opened and closed beta was announced. The open beta began on October 1, 2010. Beta testing was completed, and the game is now live in North America and Europe. In November 2013, the global Netmarble service ended and was transferred to OGPlanet. A high-definition PlayStation 4 version has been announced for a September 15, 2015 release. Set between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries, Uncharted Waters Online players will have the chance to conquer hundreds of neutral cities to ensure that their nation becomes the world's leading power. Sailors can choose to fly the flag of one of six nations: England, The Netherlands, France, Spain, Portugal or Venice, buying or building ships to ready for battle, trade routes or exploration of new worlds. Featuring nearly endless lands to visit, thousands of artifacts to discover and more than 75 professions and 100 skills to master, Uncharted Waters Online offers ample gameplay for hardcore and casual players alike.
