Crossroads, a fast-paced arcade game published in the December 1987 issue of COMPUTE!'s Gazette. Crossroads has developed a reputation as one of the greatest Commodore 64 type-ins ever published. After spending a couple of hours entering its machine-language code with MLX, we'll find out whether it deserves the hype. Written by Steve Harter when he was just 17 years old, Crossroads combines frantic maze-based shooting with impressively sophisticated enemy behaviour. Nine different types of monsters roam the maze, competing with the player for magical shields called spars, and sometimes fighting among themselves. The result feels like a combination of Robotron and Wizard of Wor, with dozens of creatures creating absolute mayhem on screen.
