8-Bit Bayonetta

Also know as: Bayonetta: Angel Land

8-Bit Bayonetta (formerly known as Bayonetta: Angel Land) is a 2D retro-styled fixed shooter game for web browsers and available for download on Steam developed by PlatinumGames alongside Bitbaboon and published by SEGA, based on the Bayonetta game franchise. The game features simplistic gameplay that uses one key for jumping and one for attack. Bayonetta, as the player character, stands at the left side of the screen while ground and aerial enemies slowly move towards her. Bayonetta cannot move, and the objective is to kill as many enemies as possible before they reach her. In the web browser version, the score that players receive can be shared on Twitter. The original version of 8-Bit Bayonetta was initially released on February 2nd, 2015 and could only be played through the 404 page on PlatinumGames' website, but was later recreated in the Unity engine and released on Steam in 2017 (though it was removed from the platform shortly after), serving as the punchline to an April Fools' joke made in 2010, a BAYO Blog post that announced an upcoming 2D game titled "Bayonetta: Angel Land", with a short YouTube video that showcased some of the gameplay. It was a platformer akin to a metroidvania that shared assets (and likely coding) with 8-Bit Bayonetta and was said to be the next Bayonetta game produced by Yusuke Hashimoto and directed by Hideki Kamiya. The blog post also stated the game would be published by SEGA before finally confirming that it was an April Fools' joke.
