Not Maxed-Out Yet? Play The Demo and See What We're Raving About! Max Payne – We said it would be one of the most talked-about action games since Half-life, and it is. Max Payne is a unique blend of third-person shooter and modern film noir. In case you're just back from mars and haven't taken a look at the game, here's the demo so you can find out what we've all been raving about. (M) The Best Free Games – Some of the 10 Best Free Games in this issue's feature are playable only on the web, but others have to be downloaded. We've put a few on the disc for your convenience. So if 100MB-plus is too big a demo for your tastes, check out Zork! Independence War 2 – Sure, its a gigantic demo, but you need 200MB to experience the graphics, sounds, and scale of Infogrames' ambitious space epic Independence War 2. You'll need to be not only a savvy pilot and sharp tactician, but a hell of a trader, too. See if you can survive the lonely life in space. (E) The Opera Mod for Half-Life – Dig all the jumping and rolling in Max Payne? Want to do that in a robust multiplayer experience? Then try The Opera mod. It's clearly inspired by the "bullet operas" of Hong Kong action films and features some stylish deathmatch action. Baseball Mogul 2002 – While the Major League Baseball season may be over, that doesn't mean you can't still be the best skipper in the business. You make the trades and the calls in one of the most absorbing stat-based sports sims we've ever played. BM2002 is the fourth installment in one of the most realistic re-creations of major sports management ever. It's a must-play. Tactical Ops Beta 2 – Half-Life isn't the only game with great mods. Unreal Tournament has its fair share of 'em, and Tactical Ops is one of the best. Though the mod features realistic weapons and settings, the emphasis is on fun and action. You may have played counter-terrorism mods before, but this one brings its own brand of fun. Vederball – This one's from a "fan". Don't even ask. Vederman insisted we include it. We wouldn't even install it if we were you. You've been warned.
