Balloons

Balloons is a 1983 shoot ’em up for the Commodore VIC-20, credited to Aaron Bobick and connected with Compute!. Very old, very obscure, and very much from the type-in / book-listing side of the VIC-20 library, this is the kind of game that feels almost buried under the machine’s better-known cartridge and cassette releases. The idea is as direct as it gets: balloons appear on screen, and the player has to pop them before they reach the bottom. There is no elaborate setup, no big character, no world to explore, and no attempt to disguise the game as anything more than a quick arcade reaction test. That extreme simplicity is exactly what gives this VIC-20 release its identity. It feels like a small programming exercise turned into a game, built around one visual idea that anybody can understand instantly. Balloons are falling, you have to stop them, and the pressure comes from keeping up before the screen gets away from you.
